The Demons by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a novel that explores the themes of morality and societal structure in a rapidly changing world. The story focuses on a group of intellectuals attempting to bring down the existing societal structure starting with a small Russian town. While the title suggests demonic possession, the book's demons are the ideas the villains aim to spread throughout the culture to make the people welcome a dictator or a gang of thugs to run the country. Nikolai Vsevolodovich Stavrogin, a shadowy but central character, suddenly acts in uncharacteristic ways, attacking people in bursts of violence because of his nihilistic philosophy. One of the members of the revolutionary cell, Ivan Pavlovich Shatov, has strong doubts about the group's goals, and his fears lead the other members to Consider killing him. The novel has received praise, with different translations of the book being deemed satisfactory. However, the book's title is largely debated, with some calling it The Possessed, while others say Demons is the correct title.
