Young, both Jewish white men, this film captures the essence of African American life after the filmmakers immersed themselves in the culture during their travels through the South. The story revolves around a railroad worker, played by Ivan Dixon, who decides to settle down and marry a preacher's daughter, portrayed by jazz singer Abbey Lincoln. However, he soon discovers that the system is rigged against him, leading him to face numerous challenges and adversity.
