Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: What is Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray used for?

Answer: Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray is primarily used to protect and preserve artwork created with dry media such as pastels, charcoal, and pencil. By forming a transparent layer over the artwork, it helps prevent smudging, fading, and dust buildup. This makes it ideal for artists looking to maintain the integrity of their pieces long-term, ensuring their hard work stays vibrant and intact for viewing or display.
  • Question: How do you apply Winsor & Newton Fixative Spray?

Answer: To apply Winsor & Newton Fixative Spray, hold the can approximately 30 cm (12 inches) from the artwork and spray in even, sweeping motions. It's best to apply multiple light coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid saturation. This technique allows for better adhesion and a more uniform finish. The spray can be used in a well-ventilated area, making it a versatile choice for both studio and outdoor use.
  • Question: Is Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray acid-free?

Answer: Yes, Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray is acid-free. This quality is crucial for artists who seek to ensure the durability and longevity of their artwork without causing damage over time. Acid-free products prevent yellowing and degradation of the materials, making this fixative a dependable choice for preserving the nuances of your creative work.
  • Question: Can Winsor & Newton Fixative Spray be used on wet media?

Answer: No, Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray is not designed for wet media like watercolor or inks. It is specifically formulated for dry media protection. For wet media, consider using a different type of spray or fixative suited to those materials. Using the appropriate fixative ensures the best results without compromising the quality of your artwork.
  • Question: How long does it take for the fixative to dry?

Answer: The drying time for Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on environmental factors like humidity and temperature. However, it's advisable to allow more time to cure fully before touching or framing the artwork. Patience ensures that your artwork is adequately protected without risking any damage to the surface.
  • Question: Is the fixative spray suitable for all types of paper?

Answer: Yes, Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray is suitable for most types of paper, including textured and smooth surfaces. This versatility makes it a preferred choice among artists working across various styles. However, always conduct a test on a small area first to ensure compatibility, especially with specialty papers, to avoid any undesirable effects.
  • Question: What finish does the Winsor & Newton Fixative Spray provide?

Answer: The Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray provides a clear, matte finish that does not alter the appearance of the artwork significantly. This quality allows artists to retain the original look of their work while ensuring protection against dust, smudging, and fading. Ideal for those who prioritize the aesthetics of their finished piece while needing reliable preservation.
  • Question: Can Fixative Spray be used for crafts and mixed media projects?

Answer: Absolutely! Winsor & Newton Professional Fixative Spray is excellent for craft projects and mixed media artwork. Artists and crafters can use it to seal layered materials, preserving the vibrancy and integrity of various elements, whether using collage, dry media, or embellishments. It's versatile enough to meet the needs of diverse creative applications.
  • Question: How should I store Winsor & Newton Fixative Spray?
