Henüz mimari projesi, avan projesi hazırlanmadan ve statik betonarme projesi yapılmadan, arsa sahiplerinin kendi arsaları üzerine inşa edecekleri yapının; temel kazı derinliği (m), kalıp için kereste miktarı (m3), çaplarına göre inşaat demiri (ton), beton için kum-çakıl (agrega) (m3) ve çimento miktarını torba veya (ton) olarak teknik elemanlardan hesaplanmasının istenmesi en çok piyasada karşılaşılan hususlardan biridir. Mesleğe yeni başlayan teknik elemanlar, yapılara ait malzeme miktarının kalfalar ve ustalar tarafından hesaplandıklarına şahit olduklarında, okuldaki teorik bilgilerin pratikte işe yaramadığı ön yargısına varırlar. Resmi ve özel sektör şantiyelerinde; taşeron imalatları ile şantiyede stoklanacak malzeme miktarını kısa sürede hesaplayamayacaklarını gören teknik elemanlar aynı ön yargının etkisinde kalırlar. Pratik yolla metraj hesaplaması yapmak için bazı ön kabullerin bilinmesi gerekir. Bu kabullerin doğruluğu deneyimli kişilerin pratikte senelerce aynı doneleri kullanarak doğruluklarına kanaat getirdikleri bir yöntemdir. Çevre ve Şehircilik Bakanlığının teknik ve özel şartnamelerine göre metraj ve maliyet hesaplarını hazırlamadan, pratik yolla metraj hesaplarının yapılması yanlışlıklara sebebiyet verebileceğinden, öncelikle konular (imalatlar) Çevre ve Şehircilik Bakanlığı poz numaraları dikkate alınarak ele alınarak yöntemler arasındaki bağlantı kurulmuştur. Böylece metrajı yapılacak imalatların önce tanıtımı yapılacak, sonra birim fiyat tarifleri verilerek Çevre ve Şehircilik Bakanlığı hesap esasları ile bağlantısı sağlanarak yanlış hesaplanın önüne geçilmiş olunacaktır.
