Christina Baker Kline's The Exiles is a historical fiction novel set in the 19th century about the harsh realities of English convicts sent to Australia and Tasmania for settlement. The book's main character is a young governess named Evangeline, who finds herself being jailed for stealing a ruby ring and is sentenced to be shipped to the penal colony in Van Diemen's Land while pregnant. Evangeline faces many hardships on the slave ship but forms a friendship with Hazel, a young Irish girl who was also convicted of theft. On Flinders Island, Mathinna, the daughter of a Lowreenne tribe chief, is adopted by the governor of Australia and treated harshly, reflecting the poor treatment of natives by the English.
